To correct a malocclusion, the orthodontist uses a removable or in most cases a fixed appliance. Some removable appliances are used to intercept a habit such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing, usually given at an early childhood (5+ years of age), while others are used to guide the jaws into proper occlusion during the growth stage (8-11 years of age). The fixed appliance (braces or clips as it is known), are used to correct the teeth alignment and achieve a functional occlusion.
Treatment usually lasts over a period of 12 to 24 months depending on the complexity of the problem. During the treatment, one has to visit the orthodontist on a periodic basis to get the braces tightened, which will guide the teeth into correct position in due course of time.
